Blocked Bid Print E-mail
Wednesday, 24 March 2010 09:13
A post script to the talk given in February about Passing-off: The New Zealand Wine Growers’ Association has successfully blocked a bid by French wine maker Lacheteau to register the name Kiwi Cuvée for a range of its wines sold in Australia. The main ground of opposition was that the name has a connotation which would be likely to deceive or cause confusion; in this case that the wines, if they were sold under such a name, would give the impression that their country of origin was New Zealand. Expressions Print E-mail
Wednesday, 24 March 2010 09:01

Ever wondered where some expressions came from? Well in medieval times in England, the floor of dwellings was dirt; only the wealthy had some other type of floor, hence the expression “dirt poor”. The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in wet weather, so they spread “thresh straw” on the floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they kept adding more thresh until, when the door was opened, it would all start to slip outside. To prevent this, a piece of wood was placed in the entrance way; this was the “threshold”.

All The Best Print E-mail

This Newsletter could not be produced without the cooperation of two local MLAs, Jane Aagaard and Chris Burns – and in particular the practical help of their assistants. So, from a very selfish point of view, we are sorry to learn that Judy Herring has decided to retire from running Dr Burns’ office. The occasional gentle upbraiding aside, we are extremely grateful for all she has done for us over the years. Judy, we wish you all the best for your retirement; now you have time for bridge, golf, travelling - and, perhaps, even joining U3A.
