International Women’s Day, on 8 March, recognises the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. On that day, at 5.15pm, the Northern Territory Library in Parliament House is launching a newly-completed online database and display Territory Women which contains biographical information on women who have lived here and contributed to the Territory way of life.

Prior to that, from 11am to 4pm on 6 March, there’s a free IWD event at Chambers Crescent Theatre, Chambers Crescent, Malak, featuring visual arts displays, performance, song, dance and storytelling, multicultural food and cooking. You are invited to take a plate of (your cultural) food to share for lunch.

Also as part of IWD 2010, the local branch of the United Nations Association is organising a short walk commencing at 10.15am on 7 March starting at the car park next to the GPO and finishing at the Tree of Knowledge at the Civic Centre where former senator Margaret Reynolds will be speaking on this year’s international theme: Empowering Women to end Poverty. The event concludes with refreshments at 11am.
